Art and technology come together.

Juan Solís
Character  Development Supervisor
Ilion Animation Studios

Ponenet

Without a doubt, character development is one of the most interesting stages of a production. Art and technology come together to achieve an optimal visual result. If this development is carried out for a production on the scale of Planet 51, then the experience becomes a thrilling challenge.

The purpose of this talk is to demonstrate the process by which we achieve the final characters; analyzing in detail each step of the Character Development work flow, from modeling, shading, facial setup and character FX to finaling.

We will explain the various stylistic decisions and motivations which have helped us; through the years, to arrive at the final look of the characters in Planet 51; how the daily effort of a great team and a desire to excel have allowed us to successfully achieve the technical and artistic targets set by Planet 51.
